Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Milton

On Wednesday, October 10th, Hurricane Milton was a direct hit on Siesta Key, Florida.  We live 7 miles east of Siesta Key.  We had many conversations as a family about whether we would stay and ride out the storm or head to a friend's house in Jacksonville.  In the end, we decided it would be best if we stayed in our home.  This was not a decision we took lightly because at the time it was predicted that Milton would be a Cat 4 with winds of 130+ MPH, some forecasts showed as high as 160 mph.

We prepared for Milton as best we could.  We put up shutters, brought every piece of outdoor furniture, decor, and grills inside.  Then we made sure we had water and food for a few days.  My husband put in a generator switch so that if the power went out we could switch over to a generator or his Ford Lightning truck.  The kids were off of school starting Monday although the hurricane was not forecasted to hit until Wednesday night.  We waited for Milton impatiently and finally around 4-5 pm on Wednesday we started to see rain and get gusts of wind.  You can follow along this day on my tiktok.

One of the things I was grateful for during the storm was our Ford F150 Lightning.  It is an electric F150 that we purchased early last year and one of the reasons my husband wanted to buy this truck was due to Ford's Pro Power.  When we lost power, he was able to use the generator switch to run our home off of his truck.  This was a game-changer for us!  While our neighbors had a few cords from their generators that ran their fridge and wifi, we were able to run our home close to normal.  The first two days we ran the house without air conditioning but on the third day we were able to install a soft starter for the upstairs A/C.  We slept in a cool house the third night which made all the difference in our quality of sleep.

One of the biggest perks of the Ford Lightning was that we had it parked inside our garage during the storm, this made it so that we could switch it on mid-storm when the power finally went out.  Two years ago during Ian, we had to wait to turn on the generator until the storm was over.  It was hot and we were sitting dark in our home.  The second thing I liked about running our home on the Ford Lightning was that it was quiet.  The neighbors were running generators and the Generac next door was so loud, but not our Lightning.  It was quiet and made a slight humming sound. I received a lot on how the Lightning worked, how long it lasted and recorded a few videos on the subject.

After Hurricane Milton, I was curious how Siesta Key had fared.  I took a drive and recorded some of what I saw.  Hurricane Milton came just two weeks after Hurricane Helene.  Helene brought a 4 ft storm surge to Siesta Key which caused most first stories to get flooded.  Milton did not bring as high of a surge, maybe 6 inches but it did bring more winds than Helene.  This delayed the remediation efforts already going on.  You can walk with me in Siesta Key.
