Scalloping in Homosassa, Florida
Scalloping Adventures in Crystal River and Homosassa, Florida
This is our third year in a row of scalloping in northwest Florida. We look forward to going every single year! We have been going with another family of 4. If you love to swim then maybe you should check out scalloping off the coast of Homosassa Florida. It's important to be a strong swimmer and to bring a net to put the scallops in.
Note: Scallop season begins July 1st and lasts through September 24th. The earlier you go, the better you will do as far as quantity of scallops. I have heard that scallops are bigger later in the season but we have not found as many when we go back in late August.
First things first, to scallop you need a boat and a fishing license from the State of Florida. We are lucky that our friends have one and are happy to bring it. A couple of years ago, we ended up renting a boat, and that went pretty well. There are a few marinas in the area that offer boat rentals too. We have done this before but the boats are slower and sometimes do not have proper anchors. . Pro Tip: Rent early if you are going during peak season. There are a lot of people on the water during the early season so make sure you know what you are doing before renting a boat. If you are not sure, there are plenty of scalloping boats and charters that will take you out. Typically charters can have 4-6 people per boat.
Our Top 3 Places to Stay in Homosassa
When it comes to planning a memorable getaway, the right accommodation can make all the difference. For families seeking plenty of space, the convenience of home-cooked meals, and activities to keep the kids entertained, great lodging sets the stage for a vacation to remember. Here are a few options:
MacRae's of Homosassa - we stayed here the first time we went to Homosassa 6 years ago. The location is phenomenal. There is a place to eat across from the parking lot, a comfortable boat ramp and you can get your scallops shucked right there too. This is an older property with no frills but it is functional, close to the boat ramp and food.
The Tradewinds - We have stayed here twice and there is a reason for it: conveniently located and comfortable. This community is made up of Mediterranean-style homes situated around a private boat ramp with slips and direct river access. It's also nice if you drive an electric vehicle (EV) because many homes have a plug near the garage, even if it's a 110-watt outlet. You can find units in The Tradewinds on VRBO or rent directly from them in the link above. The homes we have stayed in are nicely appointed and vert comfortable for our party of eight.
Our latest stay was at a beautiful home right on the river. I cannot say enough good things about this VRBO! The kids loved to fish off the dock first thing in the morning or late at night. They had space for our boat under a covered boat house, an ice maker, and a great spot to clean the fish. They also had dock lights so we could see the fish going by in the water. It was truly an amazing property. You can view it here and below are some pictures from our stay.
Top Attractions and Restaurants
Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park is a must-see. There is even a real live hippo on the property. It's a relaxing walk around a nature preserve full of local animals and nature.
Go on a wild ride in an Airboat Tour. They go through the mangroves and ride on top of the water. It's exhilarating and the kids will love it! We did our last one through River Safari and enjoyed our time.
Our favorite place to eat is Marguerita Grill. It is family-owned, has the best drinks for miles, and great food. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We can also pull up to their dock on our boat and avoid the crowded parking lot. This is our favorite place to eat, hands down!
Old Mill Tavern is an American bar. We have been going there for years. They have good burgers, wings, and drinks
Last but not least is Crumps Landing. The property is fun, has a huge tiki and the drinks are yummy. The food is mediocre but the location is great.
